Gawad Kalinga and its disaster relief efforts
Disaster Response and Reconstruction
The landless and poor constantly fall victim to natural disasters because they are forced to squat in danger zones, where they are exposed to storms, landslides and floods. Natural disasters often cause massive destruction of homes, families and lives. Every time a disaster strikes, GK volunteers and partners readily share resources, organise relief drives, and even partake in reconstruction efforts.
Beyond relief alone, GK believes those living in danger zones must be evacuated and relocated to safe sites where they can build sustainable communities and where investments pay off.

Gawad Kalinga’s rescue strategy
Proper safety, legal and environmental clearances must be secured for all sites.
Building an organised and empowered community is a good way to mitigate the effects that a natural disaster can have on people. GK seeks to equip residents with the right values and leadership skills so that when disasters strike, they are capable of responding and caring for their fellow villagers. These GK communities located in safe areas have also become incidental “evacuation centres” for neighbouring communities that are hit by natural disasters, where evacuees are cared for by the GK residents. GK's Community Building Programme ensures that GK communities to be self-reliant and sustainable by fostering unity, cultivating a strong sense of self-governance, then ultimately service for others. It is a cycle of caregiving.
